Crawley Town manager Colin Kazim-Richards has called for more urgency and a greater desire to score from his players after a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Cheltenham Town. The loss on Saturday leaves the Reds 23rd in League Two, with just four points from their opening six matches.
Dylan Morgan gave the home side an early lead with his first EFL goal, which was also Crawley's first at home this season. But the advantage was quickly overturned by a Charlie McCann double and a header from former Premier League forward Andreas Weimann. Speaking to club media after the game, Kazim-Richards pinpointed a lack of attacking hunger as a key issue.
Need for consistency
"We have to want to score as much as we want to defend," Kazim-Richards said. "It has to be the same because there’s only so many times that the guys at the back can clean it up for us." He stressed the need for his team to stick to what works, rather than changing approach out of boredom. "Right now, as I sit here and obviously not looked at anything back and not gone into detail and watch, just need more urgency," he added. "Need people to put more bodies on the line and stick to doing what’s working."
The manager highlighted a specific first-half pattern where Crawley found success down the left flank but failed to persist with it. He contrasted this with the mentality of top players. "I think sometimes we get bored of wanting to do things that are working," Kazim-Richards explained. "And then we want to try and sometimes do the opposite."
League position pressure
The result extends a difficult start to the campaign for Crawley, whose recent form reads two losses, a draw, a loss, and a win. They have conceded 11 goals while scoring only six, leaving them with a negative goal difference and eight points adrift of early leaders Barnet. The club's standings page shows the scale of the task ahead.
Kazim-Richards's immediate focus is on instilling a more ruthless edge in the final third. "When we get into those final areas that we do a million times in a game, there’s no problem with getting there and creating," he said. "We’re creating a lot of chances now. Finishing it off. We have to want to score more."
Attention now turns to a trip to Grimsby Town next Saturday, followed by a home lunchtime kick-off against Barnet the following weekend. Fans can check the full schedule on the club's fixtures page as Crawley look to turn their season around.
